Founded by Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group, The Modern is a two Michelin-starred, contemporary American restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art. Executive Chef Thomas Allan's refined, unexpectedly playful dishes highlight exceptional ingredients and seasonality in three distinct culinary experiences: a bold prix fixe menu in The Modern, overlooking MoMA's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden; an à la carte menu in the lively Bar Room; and a bespoke tasting menu in the heart of the kitchen at The Kitchen Table. Complementing Chef Allan’s menus, an extensive selection of wines showcases exceptional diversity and value in wines both classic and emerging regions. The restaurant's design by the New York-based architecture firm Bentel & Bentel offers a welcome escape from the bustling Midtown neighborhood it calls home.

Who you are: 

The Baker is responsible for the daily preparation, production, and finishing of all bread items for the restaurant. This position may entail working in a variety of techniques including, but not limited to scaling, mixing, shaping, and baking of naturally leavened bread doughs. The Baker typically has several duties that revolve around helping the kitchen stay clean and maintaining the high standards of the operation.

What you’ll do:

  • Consistently support a culture of Enlightened Hospitality
  • Create all bread-related goods applicable to the menu
  • Follow all recipes, and presentation specifics as set forth by Executive Chef and Pastry Chef
  • Follow all opening/closing kitchen procedures
  • Set up station according to Chef/Kitchen guidelines
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed and other duties as assigned to support team objectives and operational success

What we need from you:

  • Previous Baker experience and understanding of professional baking and bread formulas 
  • Knowledge and understanding of safety, sanitation and food handling procedures
  • Understand & follow written and verbal instruction & direction
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
